Artist Statement
Ever since I was very small, I looked at things up close. I noticed things easily passed over, found beauty in decay, and solace in the natural world. These threads permeate my vision, and my work. It was once said that “Country music is three chords and the truth.” My methods in painting and drawing converge at these headwaters: some combination of expressionism yielding realism, and I hope a story that is relatable and true.
Bio
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Ella grew up with memories of drawing in her diapers on the humid front porch of her childhood home before fully talking. Her parents are incredible supporters of her artistic roots, and ensured she had footing every step of the way. Levy relocated to Boulder, Colorado after a pivotal and life-changing experience on a month-long mountaineering course through Outward Bound. She continually carves time to connect and unplug in nature. Levy received her BA for Studio Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with an emphasis on painting and drawing. Her work was featured in an international exhibition exploring cultural signs and building visual languages that travelled to at-risk audiences in Colombia. Concurrently while completing her BA, she was invited to participate in two competitive Design Build internship programs at the MOA (Museum of Outdoor Arts), the outcome of which were large-scale, free public art experiences. After completing her internships, Levy went on to serve as Grant Writer and Development Officer for Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art where she was the fundraiser for all operating budget expenses. While working predominantly in painting and drawing formats, Levy also self-published a limited edition book of photography entitled, “A Life with The Earth.” She collaborates with the local Boulder Arts community, cultivating and sharing this burgeoning space over the past two decades she has lived here. Her artwork has been shown by the Boulder Arts Association, NoBo Art District, and she was a resident at Boulder Creative Collective. Her work can be found at R Gallery, and she is a Board Member of Art Sticks. Currently, she is a part of the artist community at The Crowd Collective and cultivates her practice in this space.
